Five Sentence Fiction/Neglectfulness

Five Sentence Fiction is about packing a powerful punch in a tiny fist. Each week they post a one word inspiration, then anyone wishing to participate can write a five sentence story based on the prompt word. This week's word is: ALONE

I heard the ringing of the doorbell, then the unrelenting knocking at the door.
Yet I remained seated at the kitchen table, sipping on a cup of coffee while staring out the window at the unfinished greenhouse.
My husband started the project when we first moved into our new home.
Eight years later it’s a lonely monument to a life of neglectfulness.

The knocking persisted but I didn’t move, I told him not to forget his keys.

  1. I liked what you wrote here. However, I wouldn't chuck it up to being neglectful, I'd said "it's a lonely monument to a life of LAZINESS." I also see you've got a slight wicked revengeful nature here concerning the keys. :-D :-D :-D

  2. This is great, Glynis---"a lonely monument to a life of neglectfulness"---what a haunting line. And I love that she's sitting there ignoring his persistent knocking because she told him not to forget his keys. Ooh. Such an emotionally charged story in so few words!

  3. She doesn't sound as if she gave him very much encouragement. Perhaps he wasn't lazy or neglectful. Perhaps he was looking for more pleasant company.
