The Infamous Matt McFair

Welcome
I know it's been a while Trifecta, but my life has been on hold from a lot of things. However, I'm back now, at least this week, to write in this week's challenge. I'm combining two challenges and I hope it works out. This week my 200 word story is called...The infamous Matt McFair

For the Trifecta Week III Challenge we are given the word:
Manipulate: 3rd: to change the artful or unfair means so as to serve one's purpose: to doctor

For the Scribe's Cave Picture Prompt #7
Word limit 50-200 words

The Infamous Matt McFair

I was moving to a new job in another town and needed a realtor. An associate introduced me to Matt McFair. I had a slight knowledge of real estate, but was a first time home buyer.  Matt was absolutely incredible and thorough with his assistance.  I informed him of my budget and need to get this done quickly. He assured me he would handle everything.
Matt showed me a few different properties online and fell in love with a lovely two story wood, stucco in the country that had been on the market a couple of days. There were multiple offers, but Matt’s ability to negotiate sealed the deal under budget.
He was patient and available  anytime I had questions. Matt was incredibly well-connected too, with a group of trusted people like lenders and inspectors, he used.   I  signed the contract electronically, which I thought was incredibly convenient, and we even ended up closing escrow early.
Excited, I got to town only to find I had bought an abandon, overgrown farm.  I felt foolish, whoever this Matt McFair was, he had manipulated everything from the start.
Four weeks later, I still don’t know who had swindled me out of everything.

Thank you...

  1. Nice one Glynis :-) The best revenge on McFair would be to sell the land to an oil company or developer for a nice tidy profit. I enjoyed the conversational feel to this.

  3. Sounds like the kind of property with plenty of places for a body to get lost and never be found...
Seriously, my friend-Matt McFair needs to change his last name, but you don't need to change a thing about the way you spin a story. I loved this!

  4. Great voice in this piece, so matter-of-fact and, almost distant, which works so well, as I'm sure he wants to distance himself from the mess he's gotten himself into.

  7. Succinct and well told, all the elements a story ever needs. As well as being engaging. Do we trust the digital world too much over the physical world? Have we gotten lazy, or just too plain disconnected and distant from the real world to stop the Matt McFairs of the world.

    1. I think it's a little of both. The conveniences and need it right away attitude in this digital age, has made the con artist job so much easier.
