Five Sentence Fiction: Escape

Five Sentence Fiction is about packing a powerful punch in a tiny fist. Each week they post a one word inspiration, then ask you to write a five sentence story based on the word prompt. The word does not have to appear in your five sentences, just use it for direction.
This week: DOORS
My Story this week is Escape

The smell of urine and dirt assaulted my nose, as I ran through the dark, cluttered hallway with my hands still cuffed behind my back. It made it difficult to support my balance, as his heavy footfalls echoed in pursuit and rats scurried before me. I questioned, as I followed the small stampede, if they were leading the way to my escape or were they in cahoots with my captor? Yet, I pursued as if I could hear the pied piper's song.  I smiled as hope sprang anew when the dawn of my escape came into view, but just as the horizon of my freedom crest; it was closed shut, placing me back in the darkness of my abductor's strong grip.

  1. An intense read, full of imagery. Great ending too, freedom so close. x

  2. Very raw, it's hard when escape is so close and then lost...great stuff!

  3. Really good stuff. powerful and terrifying. Love the addition of the rats, gave the piece movement and the sense of urgency, as they only usually run when at risk of being caught too.
